Real Life. Real Talk.® is a bold, social change effort. The aim is to positively change the social climate in communities by creating more open, honest, and balanced talk about sex and health.
Real Life. Real Talk. works to support parents and community leaders to feel more comfortable talking about healthy sexuality. A more positive social climate will, over time, help to ensure that people — particularly young people — have adequate information and services to enable them to make healthy sexual choices. Once people believe they are allowed to talk honestly about sex, and once they question the consequences of silence, we believe a cascade of positive behavior change in sexual health will follow.
In Our Community
In 2008 Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region joined six other communities across the nation to begin a new Real Life. Real Talk. initiative. The target population for this initiative is parents of children in Onondaga County. In the summer of 2008 PPRSR hired a national research firm to implement a survey of parents in Onondaga County to assess the needs of parents around the topic of sexual health. Over a four week period 600 households in 20 zip codes across Onondaga County participated in the survey.
We learned that:
92% agree that sex is a natural part of adolescent development.
79% agree that there should be a community wide discussion about sex education.
89% agree that the Syracuse community needs to play a significant role in the health development of adolescents
Only 56% think that others in the community share their views on sex education
Only 26% feel comfortable talking about sexual topics in a public meeting
Real Life. Real Talk. has focused on community building during 2009. The campaign has developed a rich coalition of agencies, faith communities, businesses and individuals that have joined as community partners.
At the beginning of 2011 the campaign boasted over 45 community partners and had hosted over 33 Real Life. Real Talk. Parent Programs reaching 276 parents and adults.
